First day of Clinic at OASIS

This short term mission, and all trips taken, are about sharing Our savior with others. Water filters, construction projects, language classes, medical teams, and even eyeglass clinics are all conduits that allow His people to walk in the truth and spread the Gospel to those who are hurting and in need.

This week, we bring the gift of vision from our savior, but more importantly to let everyone know He loves them so much, he sent us to say “I love you.”  We’ll not see these people again and our hopes are they will only remember that Jesus gave them some glasses.

This Angel being tested by Ashton. He was hit with a tree branch two years ago that left one of his eyes almost unusable from a distance. He’s a landscaper and has eye pressure issues, but we were able to give him a pair of glasses that will improve his vision and make working a little easier.

Team member Jody intensely helped Gloria who has cataracts. It’s hard to pinpoint a prescription for cataracts because there’s a physical membrane blocking vision in the eye. Gloria had 14 children, 2 of which have passed away. She also has 35 grandchildren. We take vision for granted, but not being able to see, or not knowing you can see more clearly, can affect all aspects of a family.

Team member Chris overheard a mother say to her daughter “I can see all of your freckles!” After getting a new pair of glasses.

We met Dr. Santosa Itomi, and her five children whom she birthed naturally and homeschools. They speak a language all their own that reflects their heritage of African, Indian, and Carrebean. She lives with her husband in the bush where she broke her glasses two years ago and heard about the clinic at the last minute from a friend. She said it’s vitally important to be able to see the snakes, tarantulas, and panthers roaming around her homestead. Dr. Itomi is a midwife and run an organization that helps celebrate and preserve her culture.

After clinic, we visited the San Ignacio weekly market. This is where families come every Saturday to buy and sell food and crafts.

“But those who wish to boast should in this alone: that they truly know Me and understand that I am the Lord Who demonstrates unfailing love and Who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken!” - Jeremiah 10:24
